Daniel was born to Mike and Amanda Ewer a week short of term. Mike is from London, England, and Amanda is from Fruitport, Michigan, so Dan will be an automatic dual citizen.
His first name was chosen because of its Irish connection, being used in the song Danny Boy, also known as Londonderry Air. Mike's dad was from Derry. The middle name Avery was chosen to revive an old Ewer tradition of taking the mother's maiden name as the first born's middle name.
He learnt to walk at 11 months. At 22 months he read his first sentence. At two and a half years old he could do simple arithmetic and had no problems reading children's books.
At four he started going to soccer practice at GR Crew, and started pre-school at Hill Child Development Center.
In 2015 he started attending Harrison Park Elementary. A year later he’d skipped to 2nd grade. By the end of 3rd grade he’d earned a second promotion, started 5th grade at C.A. Frost in the fall of 2018. He aims to move on to the Center for Economicology for 6th grade before joining the main City Middle/High campus for the remainder of his schooling.
He took part in cross-country for his school from kindergarten; and added soccer and track & field a year later, finishing second in the 2nd/3rd grade 800 meters at his last meet in 2017. He then achieved 2nd, 3rd and 4th placings in cross-country runs in the fall of 2017 plus a prolific track & field season in the spring of 2018, promoting the thought of joining GR FIRE Track Club that summer.
At GR FIRE he competed at AAU meets in 2018, qualifying for the Junior Olympics in both 1500m and long jump, missing out on a slot in the 800m by just one placing.
Originating from his cross-country running, he started road races by running a 1K at Thanksgiving 2016, and progressed to 5Ks—the first one accidental(!)—in 2017. His 5K tally is now in double figures.
He has played club soccer since the age of 4, and is currently on Midwest United’s 1st U9 team which has played up a year since the spring of 2018.
He was a member of his elementary school Robotics team in 2018 and enjoys coding on Scratch. His profile is Polygoner.
